ID Group Press Release - Mahsa Amini

ID Group undemocratically excluded from signing Iran resolution

We, as the Members of the ID Group, unequivocally condemn the undemocratic steps taken by the other groups of the European Parliament to block us from co-signing and supporting a joint motion for resolution on the death of Mahsa Jina Amini and the repression of women's rights protesters in Iran.

During the October Plenary session, the death of Mahsa Jina Amini and the repression of women's rights protesters in Iran was added to the European Parliament’s agenda. Like the other political groups, the ID Group drafted its own resolution condemning the actions and circumstances that led to her death. The political groups in the Parliament negotiated a joint motion for resolution, and the ID Group indicated that it would co-sign and support the joint motion. Yesterday we were informed that the majority of political groups refused to let us support the joint motion.

The actions of the other groups of the European Parliament ignore and undermine the democratically expressed wishes of the voters. The latest attempt to maintain the cordon sanitaire around the ID Group is a disgrace to democracy and a slap in the face of the people who elected us as representatives to defend their interests.
